چکیده

We study the effect on the distribution of return periods of rare events of the presence in a time series of finite-term correlations with non-exponential decay. Precisely, we analyze the auto-correlation function and the statistics of the return intervals of extreme values of the resistance fluctuations displayed by a resistor with granular structure in a nonequilibrium stationary state. The resistance fluctuations, δR, are calculated by Monte Carlo simulations using the SBRN model introduced some years ago by Pennetta, Trefán and Reggiani and based on a resistor network approach. A rare event occurs when δR overcomes a threshold value q significantly higher than the average value of the resistance. We have found that for highly disordered networks, when the auto-correlation function displays a non-exponential decay but yet the resistance fluctuations are characterized by a finite correlation time, the distribution of return intervals of the extreme values is well described by a stretched exponential , with exponent largely independent of the threshold q. We discuss this result and some of the main open questions related to it, also in connection with very recent findings by other authors concerning the observation of stretched exponential distributions of return intervals of extreme events in long-term correlated time series.

A time series of infectious-like events in Australia between 2000 and 2013 leading to extended periods of increased deaths (all-cause mortality) with possible links to increased hospital medical admissions

Background and aims: Trends in deaths and medical admissions in the UK and Europe show evidence for a series of infectious-like events. These events have been overlooked by traditional surveillance methodologies. Preliminary evidence points to a rise in medical admissions in Australia around the same time as those observed in Europe, and this study was aimed to evaluate whether the deaths are o...

Modeling Annual Extreme Precipitation in China Using the Generalized Extreme Value Distribution

Extreme precipitation events are the major causes of severe floods in China. In this study, four time series of daily, 2-day, 5-day, and 10-day annual maximum precipitation from 1951 to 2000 at 651 weather stations in China were analyzed. The generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution was used, to model the annual extreme precipitation events at each station. The GEV distribution was also mod...

تحلیل خشکسالی هیدرولوژیکی با روش حد آستانه ثابت (مطالعه موردی: حوزه آبخیز کرخه)

Drought is known as an environmental phenomenon which leads to socio- economic and environmental issues. Therefore its analysis is crucial for proper management and planning of water resources . The Karkheh River basin is one of the important water resources in Iran and that is located in western Iran. Current paper tries to take one step ahead toward scientific and practical drought manageme...

A comparison of parametric and non-parametric methods of standardized precipitation index (SPI) in drought monitoring (Case study: Gorganroud basin)

The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is the most common index for drought monitoring. Although the calculation of this index is usually done by using the gamma distribution fitting of precipitation data, studies have shown that for accurate monitoring of drought, the optimal distribution of precipitation in each month should be determined. On the other hand, in non-stationary time series,...
